About this event

Join PPP at the Conservative Party Spring Conference where Damian Green, PPP Deputy Chair and Social Care Report Chair and Jeremy Hunt MP, Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee will be discussing the future of social care.

On the 24th July 2019, Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared: “My job is to protect you and your parents or grandparents from the fear of having to sell your home to pay for the costs of care.” Since then, the Covid-19 pandemic has not only distracted attention from delivering sector reforms, it has also reinforced the need for such reforms to take place. This is a policy area in critical need of reform and one that should take a central focus in the mind of the Government for the year ahead. While the immediate priority amidst the pandemic is to stabilise the current system, fundamental change is required to address unmet health needs, system inefficiencies and the lack of integration within UK social care. Funding issues, workforce turnover, system integration, digital transformation and physical infrastructure are all issues that need to be addressed. Are the Dilnot proposals the best way to go or would a ‘national care service’ be a better option? Can we make progress without whole-system funding reform? While the problem is national, it is clear that there can be no solution without action at the local level.

The solution to the challenge of social care must take into account the views from local government. PPP will bring together councillors, MPs and party members from across the country to assess the concerns, proposals and views of local citizens, leaders, providers and administrators to develop a national solution. Could local taxation, local budgets and local commissioning provide better accountability and more well-resourced solutions to social care? We want to hear from those experiencing the challenges on a day by day basis. This session will bring together leaders from across the sector and will focus on the key themes of innovation, integration, infrastructure and funding. The outcome will be feed-in to the PPP State of the Nation report on A new vision for social care.
