Report Launch: Volunteering, Covid and Integrated Care Challenges and Opportunities

We would be delighted if you would join us for the virtual launch event of this landmark report as we bring together stakeholders from across the landscape of health and care, volunteering and industry to recognise the contributions of volunteers to the health outcomes of citizens. We hope to present recommendations to providers, policymakers and partners that provide clear steps to realising the benefits that volunteers bring.

The report, written by Jeremy Hughes CBE, seeks to assess the role of volunteers in the provision of health and care. It has assessed the changes observed over the last decade and particularly in 2020 as a result of the response to Covid-19, including the contribution made by NHS Volunteer Responders.

Even before the pandemic, there was growing awareness of the role volunteers could play to support patients. There has been an increased recognition that health and social care services need to be more integrated to achieve lasting and affordable change in patient support. We are optimistic that new government legislation may make headway in this endeavour this year. More patient centred care, tackling inequalities, and increasing social prescribing also all point to an increased role for volunteers.

By contributing their skills and commitment alongside staff, volunteers can help the NHS to transform its relationship with patients and meet the challenges posed by Covid-19 and its aftermath.
