Research and development sit at the centre of any pathogen surveillance network, but how this is configured is not intuitive. Furthermore, there is likely to be huge gains by considering the next generation of sequencing technology innovations, and we need plans to capitalise on this. Finally, as a discipline, pathogen metagenomics has not made the leap from research to translation. Yet this may be required for a One Health approach to disease surveillance and control.
