The decentralisation of clinical trials does not necessarily make patient participation more convenient or reassure patients. Remote trialling and testing networks should be carefully developed with an awareness that conducting clinical research in a patient’s home may be a source of discomfort.

Researchers should regularly update their patient and public involvement strategies to enable maximal involvement in the design and implementation of trials. Clearly embedding, and high-lighting, patient-involvement will help to emphasise the value of the trial to the public and improve relatability. These updates should adhere to the HRA’s Best Practice Principles for Public Involvement.
